Schenck's new Green Technology Center as an innovation driver for manufacturers

Schenck RoTec has now opened its Green Technology Center in Darmstadt. Here, the entire service spectrum for the development and production of rotors is offered. The transformation towards e-mobility, especially for automotive, aerospace, and aviation, continuously demands innovations. At the Green Technology Center, manufacturers can access the complete know-how of the world market leader in balancing technology. Rotor testing, spin testing, burst analysis, process consulting, and certification facilitate the prototyping and development of rotors. The opening was attended by Jörg Brunke (Board of Directors, Carl Schenck AG) and Lars Künne (Deputy Managing Director, Schenck RoTec) together with Dietmar Heinrich (Chief Financial Officer Dürr AG). In addition to batteries, the electric drive is considered the heart of an electric vehicle. The performance requirements, such as higher rotor speeds and corresponding higher centrifugal forces, are constantly increasing. Improved prototyping and earlier rotor testing are crucial for all manufacturers. Therefore, Schenck RoTec has established the Green Technology Center: all types of rotor tests in one place, combined with high consulting expertise. This enables more efficient processes and significantly accelerates rotor test turnaround times. Ultimately, customers benefit from shorter development cycles. With modern machine equipment, tests and adjustments can also be carried out more precisely, increasing product quality.

Certified measurement room sets new standards
The Green Technology Center is equipped with four different spin testers. After spin testing, the rotors are examined in a specially equipped measurement room. These rotors can come from "classic" electric motors for cars, as well as from drives in the aviation sector or rotating components for hydrogen use. Deformations of the rotors resulting from spin tests are analyzed precisely here. In a pre-tempering room, rotors are brought to the temperatures necessary for measurement. The certified measurement room is considered a leader in the technology for the metrological qualification of balancing and spin systems. In addition, possible unbalances can be identified and corrected on-site using four balancing machines at the Green Technology Center. "Today, for many vehicle manufacturers, the electric motor, along with the battery, is the core for differentiation. Just as with the internal combustion engine, it is about 'driveability', the driving pleasure from acceleration, responsiveness, and range. This results in electric motors with various performances, characteristics, and designs," explained Jörg Brunke (Board of Directors, Carl Schenck AG). This individuality can be developed specifically in the Green Technology Center.

Global network
The Green Technology Center in Darmstadt forms the center of a whole network of similar services that Schenck RoTec, as a global company, also offers in China, the USA, and Japan. "We are already very successful in this area today, and the growth opportunities are excellent," informed Lars Künne, Deputy Managing Director and responsible for the core market of Green Technology at Schenck RoTec. Dietmar Heinrich, CFO of the Dürr Group, explained at the opening: “In the Dürr Group, we recognized the potential of electromobility early on and decided to strategically expand this future business field. The opening of the Green Technology Center at Schenck is another step in this direction. The traditional business of balancing technology for internal combustion engines is losing its importance. Instead of primarily offering technology for balancing crankshafts, as we did in the past, we are now focusing mainly on rotors for electric motors in the automotive business.”
